| | | Development policy Switzerland's international cooperation needs sufficient
funds for a long-term and effective development cooperation. The redistribution of the IC budget in favour of
increasing Switzerland's military expenditures as demanded by the Council of
States on 3 June and the costs for the reconstruction of Ukraine threaten to
abruptly cut Switzerland's international cooperation budget and significantly
weaken its development cooperation. | |

Annual
Conference 2024
Sustainable,
equitable partnerships in North-South collaboration - Lessons learned for
future funding models We are
looking back at our annual conference with 13 online workshops and the hybrid
conference on 31 May. We had broad and fruitful discussions on funding models
for sustainable North-South collaborations in research and education.
Discussions showed that the collaboration between researchers from Switzerland
and LMICs should not be limited to specific programmes, but should be
mainstreamed in all funding programmes. Learn more
about the conference. | |

Swiss
science diplomacy Strategies, instruments and implications for international
cooperation Switzerland has placed a strong emphasis on science diplomacy in recent years,
formally adopting the concept at the federal level and establishing new
instruments to support it. This policy brief provides an overview of
Switzerland's science diplomacy ecosystem, highlighting opportunities and gaps.
Recommendations focus on further strengthening Swiss science diplomacy through
alignment of terminology and strategies at the federal level, fostering
communication between Swiss science diplomacy actors and developing a Swissnex
Africa strategy. | |

Missing Dollars: Illicit Financial Flows from Commodity Trade
Illicit financial flows (IFFs) associated with commodity trade erode the tax base of resource-rich developing countries. Curbing IFFs and reforming taxation stumbles over enhanced North-South tensions but remain crucial to help poorer countries mobilize domestic resources for development. The 17th volume of International Development Policy examines this key part of the wider agenda to restore trust in the multilateral system, calling for a more transparent, effective and equitable trade and tax framework.

Illicit
gold trade in Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso's estimated one million artisanal
miners produce at least 9 tonnes of gold. However, official exports account for only 5% of
this conservative estimate. This means that at least 95% of the gold mined by
artisanal and small-scale miners in Burkina Faso is smuggled out of the country
every year. The article, published open-access in World Development, asks about the role of donors in all
this and what the current dynamics of the gold trade mean for the far-reaching
reforms of the gold trade introduced by the current military junta.

Million Deaths Averted: Contribution of Vaccination over the Past 50 Years
In 1974, the World Health Organization launched its
Expanded Programme on Immunization. Now, 50 years later, a study shows that an
estimated 154 million deaths have been averted thanks to vaccination. In 2024,
a child under 10 years of age is 40% more likely to survive to their next
birthday. The study published today in The Lancet was led by Swiss TPH in
collaboration with WHO and numerous research organisations.
